Connecting options, Ihram timing and baggage rules for Azad Jammu & Kashmir travellers are covered in our Umrah flights guide.
Hotels, inclusions, prices, documents and departure day are covered once in our full guide — choose what your Azad Jammu & Kashmir trip needs:
Pilgrims from Azad Jammu & Kashmir fly from Islamabad International Airport, which has non-stop flights to both Jeddah and Madinah. Mirpur and Kotli families reach it by road through the Jhelum area, and Muzaffarabad families through the hills. Mountain weather and landslides can slow the drive, so travel the day before early flights. Relatives abroad can meet the family in Makkah on their own visas.
Azad Jammu & Kashmir has no international airport of its own, so every Umrah journey from AJK starts on the road. For families in Mirpur and the south, that means a drive through the Jhelum area to Islamabad. For families in Muzaffarabad and the valleys to the north, it means a longer journey through the hills, where weather and landslides can change a journey's length without warning.
AJK families also have a feature that shapes many Umrah trips: relatives abroad. Mirpur and Kotli in particular have close family links with the United Kingdom and elsewhere, and many Umrah trips are planned, paid for or joined by relatives living overseas. That brings extra questions about visas, meeting points and payments, which this guide answers.
For hotels, package categories and visa rules in general, see our complete Umrah guide. This page covers what is specific to AJK.
When we checked airline schedules on 25 September 2026, Islamabad International Airport (ISB) had:
| Route | Airlines found | Approximate flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Islamabad–Jeddah non-stop | PIA, Airblue, Fly Jinnah, AirSial, Saudia | About 5–6 hours |
| Islamabad–Madinah non-stop | PIA, Airblue | About 5–6 hours |
Islamabad gives AJK families good choice: several airlines to Jeddah and a Madinah option. Madinah flights run on fewer days, and all schedules change by season, so ask for the exact flight numbers for your dates.
Some families in southern AJK also compare Lahore or Sialkot. Sialkot had limited-day Jeddah flights when we checked. That's worth doing when Islamabad has no suitable flight on your dates.
Mirpur is closest to the Islamabad airport route among AJK's main cities, via the Jhelum area and the GT Road or motorway links. The drive is manageable, but traffic near Rawalpindi and Islamabad can add time. Many Mirpur families have relatives abroad, which often shapes the trip. See Umrah from Mirpur.
Kotli's route to Islamabad runs through hilly country, and the road can be slow in rain. Most Kotli families travel the day before an early flight. See Umrah from Kotli.
Muzaffarabad is the furthest of the three from Islamabad in practical terms, with a mountain road that can be affected by landslides in the monsoon and by rain and snow in winter. Plan a full day's margin. See Umrah from Muzaffarabad.
Families from Bagh, Rawalakot, Bhimber, Neelum and other towns follow the same pattern: road to Islamabad, with extra time for mountain conditions. Tell us your town and we'll suggest the most practical plan.
| Option | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road to Islamabad, non-stop flight | Several airlines; Madinah option | Mountain drive; weather risk | Almost all AJK pilgrims |
| Road to Sialkot, limited-day flight | Can be convenient for southern AJK | Few flight days; no Madinah flights found | Bhimber and Mirpur area, when dates match |
| Road to Lahore, non-stop flight | More airlines; Madinah option | Longer drive from most of AJK | When Islamabad has no suitable date |
| Connecting flight via the Gulf | Sometimes cheaper | Layovers; tiring for elders | Fit, flexible travellers |
The road to the airport is the part of an AJK Umrah that most often goes wrong. Plan it as carefully as the flight:
If you want road transport from your town arranged, ask for it in your quote. It is not included unless listed.
Because Islamabad has non-stop flights to both cities, AJK families can choose.
Ask for both options priced. Madinah flights run on fewer days, so the choice may depend on your dates.
This example shows a comfortable pace for a family with elders, starting in Madinah. Your operator adapts it to your flights and hotels.
| Day | Where | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Islamabad | Drive down from AJK; overnight near the airport |
| 1 | Madinah | Fly Islamabad–Madinah; check in and rest |
| 2–3 | Madinah | Prayers in Masjid an-Nabawi; Rawdah at the booked Nusuk slot |
| 4 | Madinah | Morning Ziyarat (Quba, Uhud); afternoon rest |
| 5 | Madinah | Prayers only; pack in the evening |
| 6 | To Makkah | Ihram at the Miqat; road or train to Makkah; Umrah when rested |
| 7 | Makkah | Recovery day |
| 8–11 | Makkah | Prayers; Tawaf at quiet hours; one Ziyarat morning |
| 12 | Departure | Transfer to Jeddah; fly to Islamabad; rest before driving home |
The key idea: travel days, the Umrah and Ziyarat each get their own day, with rest in between.
Many AJK Umrah trips involve relatives overseas, whether they are paying for parents' Umrah or joining the family in Makkah. Here's how it usually works:
AJK residents use the same documents as other Pakistani pilgrims:
| Period | Demand | AJK-specific notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ramadan | Very high | Islamabad flights fill early; book as soon as dates are fixed |
| Rajab and Sha'ban | High | Popular pre-Ramadan window |
| Winter holidays | High | Rain and snow on mountain roads; travel a day early |
| Summer | Moderate | Families from cool valleys find Makkah very hot; monsoon landslide risk at home |
| Muharram and Safar | Lower | Best value; easier hotel choice |
Summer also brings visits from relatives abroad during their school holidays, and some families combine those visits with Umrah. If that's your plan, book early. Summer is very hot in Makkah, so choose a closer hotel and do your walking early and late.
Saudi rules have relaxed for adult women in organised groups, but operator policies and document checks vary. Tell the operator about every woman travelling before booking, and ask to be placed with family members.
Many AJK families bring children, often during school holidays or when relatives visit from abroad. Children can perform Umrah, and it can be a lifelong memory for them, but they need planning:
| Your group | Category that usually fits | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Young, fit travellers | Economy | Lowest cost; shared rooms |
| Couples, first-timers | 3 Star | Private rooms; manageable walk |
| Families with elders | 4 Star | Shorter walk in the heat |
| Very elderly, or a gift trip from abroad | 5 Star | Shortest walk; most comfort |
Mixing categories often works well: a closer hotel in Makkah and a 3 star in Madinah, where many hotels are close to Masjid an-Nabawi anyway.
The package price is driven by dates, hotel distance and category, room sharing, airline and the Makkah/Madinah split, just as for any Pakistani pilgrim. For AJK, add:
Include these when comparing quotes, so you see the real total.
For AJK families, a night near Islamabad is the single best protection against a missed flight.
A Madinah-first trip avoids Ihram on the plane and gives elders time to recover.
Hotels in Makkah can be aligned for everyone, but only if bookings are made together.
For southern AJK, Sialkot's limited-day flights can occasionally save the day.
Families from cool mountain towns should plan light clothes, shade and regular Zamzam in Makkah.
A single landslide or traffic jam can mean missing the flight. Travel early.
Booked separately, family members can end up in different hotels on different dates.
They need their own visa from their own country. Check current Saudi rules for their nationality.
Passport and vaccination trips to the city take time. Start early.
Check the operator and pay only a business account.
Umrah from AJK is straightforward once the road journey is planned properly and the family, at home and abroad, is coordinated.
A practical takeaway: write down everyone travelling, including relatives abroad, with their passport country and preferred dates, before asking for a quote. It makes aligning flights and hotels much easier. Then choose your city below.
